Prospective Medical Students Visit Northwestern for Second Look

By

Feinberg welcomed 150 admitted medical students to campus for a “Second Look” event on April 11 and 12. The two-day event provided accepted students with an opportunity to learn more about the medical school’s campus, health equity and inclusion efforts, curriculum and community. Visiting students attended symposiums and active learning simulations, had a chance to connect with current students and faculty, and toured the campus. Students also heard from several affinity group leaders at Feinberg, as well as representatives from Feinberg’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Second Look began with a panel on community engagement and advocacy, during which faculty presented about the efforts being made at Feinberg and Northwestern Medicine to advance health equity and inclusion in medicine. Photography by Gr8y Productions

During a reception hosted by Eric G. Neilson, MD, vice president for medical affairs and Lewis Landsberg Dean, and Marianne Green, MD, the Raymond H. Curry, MD, Professor of Medical Education and vice dean for Education, attendees mingled with peers, current medical students and faculty and were treated to an assortment of Chicago-style dishes.

Roopal Kundu, MD, the Jacob R. Suker, MD, Professor of Medical Education and associate dean for admissions, welcomed admitted students during the reception.

During the Feinberg Community Brunch, first-year medical students answered questions from attendees, offered advice about navigating the transition to medical school, and shared their personal reasons for choosing Feinberg.

Feinberg’s Second Look Community Brunch was held at Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Feinberg Pavilion.

David Salzman, MD, associate professor of Emergency Medicine and of Medical Education, led students through an active simulated learning session in the Active Learning Classroom.

During the second look activities, current Feinberg medical students led a tour of the campus, including the anatomy lab and visits to affiliate hospitals.

Second Look participants also attended a student organizations and activities fair, as well as breakout sessions about global health opportunities and dual degree programs in bioethics and public health.
