Medical students, trainees, faculty and staff gathered on November 17 to recognize and celebrate the creative talents of the Feinberg community at the Feinberg Art Fair, now in its second year.
The evening event, held in the Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center atrium, was organized by second-year medical students Kevin Chen, Sandra Ojeaburu and Reyna Patel, with support from the Student Senate, the Augusta Webster, MD, Office of Medical Education and the Department of Medical Education.
After experiencing the art fair for the first time last year, Patel said she and her fellow students knew they wanted to bring it back.
“So many people have expressed to me the joy and awe of seeing the undisclosed artistic talents of their peers and colleagues,” Patel said. “Our hope is that the art fair continues to be a source of wonderment as a Feinberg tradition for years to come.”
The fair showcased artwork, including paintings, drawings, fabric crafts and photography, from more than 20 Feinberg students, faculty and staff.
“Showcasing art as a medium to capture the compelling narratives of our interdisciplinary community is what the art fair is all about, with the goal of bringing to light the depth and texture that our students, faculty and staff bring to this institution,” Patel said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to create a space of appreciation for each other and the stories that define us.”
Chen said he first found out about the art fair when he attended and submitted work to the show last year as a first-year medical student.
“I was really inspired to become involved and blown away by our community’s talent in art,” Chen said. “I studied art in college, and I knew that I wanted to integrate my passion for the arts as a medical student, so having a venue to showcase my work and chat with other artists at Feinberg to learn about their unique narratives and perspectives means a great deal to me.”
The event also served as a fundraiser for the nonprofit Arts of Life, which provides artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership.
