In Memoriam (Joseph Pasternak)
Joseph F. Pasternak, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and of neurology at the Feinberg School, died December 5, 2006, after a five-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Pasternak received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, followed by an MD degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he also completed a fellowship in child neurology. He joined Northwestern in 1979 as head of the Division of Pediatric Neurology at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. He is survived by his wife and professional partner of 27 years, Barbara L. Trommer, MD, GME ’83, associate professor of pediatrics at the Feinberg School, and daughters Emily, 22, and Rebecca, 17.
Memorial services were held at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels in Forest Hills, New York, and Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Pasternak asked that memorial contributions be donated to the University of Iowa Foundation, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa, and be directed to the I. Joel and Bernice Jacobson Pasternak Prize in Mathematics, which was established by Dr. Pasternak in honor of his parents.
