Feinberg School Leads Research Funding at NU
In 2002 the Feinberg School of Medicine received $158,026,695 in research awards, more than any other Northwestern school. Medical school awards accounted for more than 48 percent of overall awards to the University, which totaled $324,507,137. This is the first time in University history that research volume has exceeded $300 million. Awards to the University increased 15.6 percent from the 2001 total of $280,692,372. The average annual increase for the decade 1993â2002 was 9.1 percent, according to the Office of the Vice President for Research.
Awards to the Chicago campus (including the School of Law) jumped 11.4 percent from $145.5 million in 2001 to $162.1 million in 2002, while awards to the Evanston campus jumped 21.1 percent from $112.9 million to $136.7 million. Federal awards increased 13.1 percent to $231.5 million, accounting for 71.3 percent of University awards. Awards from industry jumped 26.1 percent to $27.2 million, and foundation awards increased 5.4 percent to $24.5 million.
Additional funding included a $10 million award from the State of Illinois Capital Development Board for construction of the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center; a $3.4 million award from the Health Resources and Services Administration for health care facilities and other construction; and a $4.3 million award from the National Cancer Institute to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
