In Memoriam (Theodor Braun)

Theodor Braun, MD, PhD, professor emeritus of physiology, died August 28. He was 76. A resident of Skokie, Illinois, Dr. Braun was born in Uzhorod, Czechoslovakia, and earned his MD degree in 1951 and CSc degree (equivalent to an American PhD) in physiology in 1964 at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague. After serving on the faculty at Charles University in Plzen, Czechoslovakia, and the Research Institute of Human Nutrition in Prague, he came to the United States in 1967 as a visiting investigator in the Department of Regulatory Biology at the Institute for Biomedical Research of the American Medical Association in Chicago. In 1970 he was appointed associate professor of physiology at Northwestern, advancing to professor in 1986. Dr. Braun served as associate chair of physiology from 1990–96 and achieved emeritus status in 1997. His research interests included diabetes, lipid metabolism, mechanisms of hormone action, and the development and regulation of testis and spermatozoal adenylate cyclase systems. His latest research elucidated the biochemical pathways regulating adenylate cyclase in the testis, a key enzyme involved in human conception. He is survived by wife Eva and sons Peter and Ivo
