Third place winner, Mark McClendon, is a graduate student in the laboratory of Samuel Stupp, PhD, director of the Institute for Bionanotechnology in Medicine. In this image, microspheres of polylactic acid (orange) are randomly dispersed on the surface of a salt crystal (blue). The polylactic acid expands, and when the salt is washed away, a polymer matrix with vacant pores remains. These porous structures can be molded to create artificial tissues.

Science in Society, Northwestern University’s office dedicated to science outreach and public engagement, revealed the winners of its 2012 Scientific Images Contest Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston. The five winning images and seven honorable mentions will be on display through Oct. 31. This is the third year the contest has been held.

Each piece, judged by a panel of local artists, scientists, and community leaders, is representative of Northwestern University research. Submitted by faculty, students, and staff, the images cover a wide range of disciplines including medicine, chemistry, engineering, and nanotechnology.
