In Memoriam (Eugene Derlacki)

Eugene L. Derlacki, MD, professor emeritus of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine, died July 21 at a retirement home in Corvallis, Oregon; he was 91. Born and raised in the Chicago area, Dr. Derlacki obtained both his bachelor’s and MD degrees from Northwestern University. He completed an internship and residency in otolaryngology at Stroger Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital). After serving as a physician in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Dr. Derlacki entered private practice in Chicago with Drs. George Shambaugh and Arthur Juers. He joined the Northwestern faculty in 1946 and achieved emeritus status in 1981.

A specialist in congenital cholesteatoma (tumor of the ear), Dr. Derlacki held numerous leadership positions in his field including presidency of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, and Council of the American Otological Society.

Survivors include a brother, Walter; two daughters, Deborah Jean and Judith Trail; and two granddaughters.
