    How Are Overdoses and Cardiac Arrest Related?

    With a cardiac arrest, the “heart stops and cannot do its vital function to pump blood to the rest of the body,” Dr. Quentin Youmans, a heart failure and heart transplant specialist at Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, told USA TODAY in a statement.

    While irregular heart rhythms cause most sudden cardiac arrests, recreational drug use can cause cardiac arrest in otherwise healthy people.

    Some people are born with a genetic predisposition to allergy. But “it’s not all genetics,” says Ruchi Gupta, director of the Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research at Northwestern University in Illinois. Often, “something is turning it on.”

    One such “on switch” is Covid-19, which can leave its stamp on the immune system in the form of new allergies.

    A Woman’s Postpartum Symptoms Wouldn’t Go Away. A Brain Tumor Was to Blame.

    Her care team found a tiny benign tumor, known as a prolactinoma, on her pituitary gland. It was producing excess hormones and causing her symptoms.

    Operating on such tumors is rare, said Dr. Stephen McGill, a neurosurgeon at Northwestern University who treated Fasone. Instead, it is usually treated with an oral medication that typically results in the tumor “melting away on its own,” McGill said.

    Data shows that one in 60 people will get pancreatic cancer. Yet regular screenings are not offered to the masses. But for those with a family history and genetic factors, it’s one local doctor’s mission to catch it before the disease turns deadly.
