Northwestern Memorial Hospital is recognized among the top 10 hospitals in the country and remains No. 1 in Chicago and Illinois

Four Northwestern Medicine hospitals have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its 2019-20 Best Hospitals rankings.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital has again been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country, ranking 10th on the prestigious Best Hospitals Honor Roll, the first year it has been ranked in the top ten, and the only hospital in Illinois to receive the honor.

Northwestern Memorial remained ranked first in both the Chicago Metro Region and Illinois for the eighth consecutive year. Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital was ranked sixth in the Chicago Metro region and sixth in Illinois. Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital was ranked 15th in the Chicago Metro region and 18th in Illinois. Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital was ranked 20th in the Chicago Metro region and 25th in Illinois.

“We’re proud to once again have our hospitals recognized among the best in the country,” said Dean M. Harrison, president and chief executive officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “While these rankings are assigned to individual hospitals, this recognition reflects the relentless commitment, dedication and expertise of Northwestern Medicine’s physicians, nurses and staff across our health system who partner to provide our patients with world-class care each and every day while working to advance medicine and find tomorrow’s treatments.”

For the 2019-20 rankings, U.S. News evaluated hospitals across 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions. Only 165 hospitals, or about three percent of the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated, were nationally ranked in even one specialty.

Northwestern Memorial is nationally ranked in 12 out of 16 specialties and is high performing in all nine procedures and conditions. Of the 12 nationally ranked specialties, four clinical programs at Northwestern Memorial are ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the country:

Northwestern Memorial Hospital was ranked fifth for Neurology and Neurosurgery, seventh for Cardiology and Heart Surgery, seventh for Geriatrics, and 10th for Cancer. In addition, Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital ranked in Orthopaedics (32nd) and was ranked high-performing in Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as in all nine procedures and conditions. Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital was ranked high-performing in Orthopaedics and Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital was high-performing in GI and GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Orthopaedics and Pulmonology.

The Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing among other care-related indicators.

AbilityLab and Lurie Children’s Receive High Marks

Meanwhile, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (previously known as the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) continues to be recognized as the national leader in Rehabilitation, topping the U.S. News list for 29 consecutive years. The AbilityLab is the only hospital of its kind to hold this distinction.

Earlier this summer, U.S. News placed Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago among the top children’s hospitals in the nation, and ranked its Cardiology and Heart Surgery program second in the nation, Urology fifth, Gastroenterology & GI surgery eighth, and Nephrology 10th.
