Nat Soper Named Surgery Chair

Dr. Nathaniel SoperJust one year after he began serving as interim chair of the Department of Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Nathaniel J. Soper, MD, became the permanent chair on July 1.

An Iowa native, Dr. Soper received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, and MD degree from the University of Iowa. He completed internship and residency training in surgery at the University of Utah, where he also served as a research fellow and chief resident. He then completed a National Institutes of Health research fellowship in digestive diseases at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to joining Northwestern in 2003, Dr. Soper had been at faculty member at Washington University.

Dr. Soper has served as vice chair for clinical affairs and director of minimally invasive surgery in the surgery department at Northwestern. In 2004 he was named the James R. Hines Professor of Surgery, a title he will relinquish for his new role.

A member of numerous professional organizations and widely published in his field, Dr. Soper is the immediate past president of the International Socety of Digestive Surgery. He also serves on the editorial boards of six journals. His research interests focus on the application of laparosopic surgery for gastrointestinal and gallbladder diseases.
