Albrecht-Buehler Elected to European Academy
CHICAGO— Guenter Albrecht-Buehler, Robert Laughlin Rea Professor of Anatomy and professor of cell and molecular biology at The Feinberg School of Medicine, has been elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Albrecht-Buehler was elected to the academy based on his “outstanding and lasting contribution to cell communication and movement research.”
His research attempts to integrate all of the cells’ cytoskeletal and molecular activities that are responsible for regulating cellular behavior patterns. His work on the role of the centrosome, a structure located near the nucleus and the microtubule organizing center of the cell, suggests that the centrosome is the “brain” or unifying system that controls cell motility.
Dr. Albrecht-Buehler joined the Northwestern faculty in 1982. He previously was senior staff investigator and head of the cell biology section at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., and a research associate at the University of Florida at Gainesville.
He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Friedrich Miescher Institute, Basel, Switzerland and an investigator at the Institute for Biology, Gesellschaft f. Strahlenforschung, Munich, Germany.
He received a master of science degree from the Universitaet, Munich, and a PhD degree from the Technische Universitaet, Munich.
Dr. Albrecht-Buehler has published nearly 100 scientific articles and has been invited to present his research throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies, Berlin.
