Northwestern University Detail Award Lists

Issam A. Awad, MD, professor of neurological surgery, serves as historian and archivist for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians honored Adam W. Bennett, MD, assistant professor of clinical family medicine, with a teacher of the year award on October 4. Northwestern medical student Michelle L. Wu of Diamond Bar, California, nominated Dr. Bennett, describing him as “someone who truly cares about his students and wants us not only to success but to be happy in all that we do.”

Bechara N. Choucair, MD, assistant professor of clinical family medicine, received the 2007 Pfizer Teacher Development Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians for his commitment to education in family medicine.

On February 11, 2008 Nicholas P. Cianciotto, PhD, professor of microbiology-immunology, was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Thirty-eight microbiologists have been elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology. Fellows of the Academy are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-review process, based on their records of scientific achievement and originial contributions that have advanced mircrobiology.

Serving a one-year term as president of the National Association of MD/PhD Programs is David M. Engman, MD, PhD, professor of pathology and director of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Feinberg School.

John H. Fournier, MD, assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology, was elected governor of the International College of Surgeons at its meeting November 22 in Lima, Peru. Dr. Fournier also was appointed editor of the college’s journal, International Surgery, in 2007.

In December Jane L. Holl, MD, MPH, became acting director of the Institute for Healthcare Studies, succeeding Kevin B. Weiss, MD, MPH, who left Northwestern that month to become president and chief executive officer for the American Board of Medical Specialties, whose offices are located in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Weiss will remain on the Feinberg School faculty.

Louis G. Keith, MD, PhD, received an honorary doctorate of science degree from the Academy of Medical Sciences in Lublin, Poland, on October 1.

Toshio Narahashi, PhD, Alfred N. Richards Professor of Pharmacology, John Evans Professor, and professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, will receive the Society of Toxicology’s lifetime achievement award during the group’s annual meeting during March in Seattle.

The American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia presented its 2007 Surgery Mentoring Award to William H. Pearce, MD, Violet R. and Charles A. Baldwin Professor of Vascular Surgery and chief of vascular surgery, on November 6 in Orlando, Florida. He was cited for his exceptional support of scientists in the field through mentoring and advocacy.

Carla M. Pugh, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery, was honored by the Cosmopolitan Chamber of Commerce on October 19 with its Public Service Award. The chamber is a nonprofit organization that brings together community-based organizations and minority and small business groups with the goal of making a difference in Chicago.

Joshua M. Rosenow, MD, assistant professor of neurological surgery, has been elected chair of the Section on Pain for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Hank S. Seifert, PhD, professor of microbiology—immunology, was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In October Norman M. Simon, MD, professor of medicine, received the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois’ Lifetime of Service Award. Dr. Simon was cited for his contributions to nephrology including teaching hundreds of future physicians and caring for many patients who have experienced his “single-minded focus” on treating kidney disease.

On February 19 Paula H. Stern, PhD, professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, received the 12th Annual Distinguished Women in Medicine Science Award from the Feinberg School of Medicine’s Women Faculty Organization.

Diane B. Wayne, MD ’91, was honored during the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting in November with the Thomas Hale Ham Award for New Investigators for a article reporting the results of internal medicine residents’ retention of advanced cardiac life support skills that was published in Academic Medicine. This project was a collaboration among the medicine and anesthesiology departments and medical education office at the Feinberg School.

The Society for Vascular Surgery presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to James S.T. Yao, MD, PhD, Magerstadt Professor of Surgery. A leader in vascular surgery for more than three decades, Dr. Yao in 1975, along with John J. Bergan, MD, created at Northwestern one of the first vascular surgery fellowships in the country.
