Richard H. Bell Jr., MD ’71, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor of Surgery and surgery department chair at the Feinberg School of Medicine, will become assistant executive director of the American Board of Surgery in Philadelphia on August 1. Nathaniel J. Soper, MD, James R. Hines Professor of Surgery and vice chair for clinical affairs, will serve as interim chair while a national search is conducted for Dr. Bell’s successor.

Three third-year medical students from the Feinberg School were awarded Chicago-Area Schweitzer Fellowships: Clara E. Filice, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Edwin K. McDonald, of Crete, Illinois, and Eijean I. Wu, of Pompton Plains, New Jersey. The fellowship is a year-long service learning program for health professions students committed to helping underserved communities. In partnership with a community health clinic, social service agency, school, or church, each fellow designs and then directs a project to improve health and access to health care for populations that are often uninsured and marginalized.

The American Society for Plastic Surgery has named Julius W. Few, MD, GME ’00, assistant professor of surgery, as a member of its board of directors and chair of public education.

David Green, MD, PhD, professor of medicine, received the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Research Society Award for Outstanding Life Achievement on April 20 during the society’s annual meeting in Chicago.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has presented a distinguished service award to Paul A. Greenberger, MD, professor of medicine, in recognition of his service to the academy as a leader of the education and research trust since 1995, program director, and member of the residency review committee. He was also elected secretary-treasurer and will serve as the academy’s president in 2009.

J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, Irving S. Cutter Professor and chair of medicine, has been named the first Dorothy Ann and Clarence L. Ver Steeg Distinguished Research Fellow at Northwestern University. The award, which recognizes excellence in research by a faculty member, is accompanied by a $30,000 research grant. Professor Ver Steeg was a faculty member in the history department from 1950–92 and served as dean of the Graduate School from 1975–86.

Debjani Mukherjee, PhD, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, has been named a Fulbright Scholar for 2006–07. She will spend nine months conducting research on the social and ethical dimensions of long-term adjustment to traumatic brain injury in Calcutta (Kolkata), India.

Karla Fullner Satchell, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology—immunology, has received the Burroughs Wellcome Award for New Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease.

John J. Sciarra, MD, PhD, Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received honorary membership from the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy at its annual meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in March.

The American Academy of Microbiology has elected H. Steven Seifert, PhD, professor of microbiology—immunology as a fellow. The academy is the honorary leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology and recognizes excellence, originality, and creativity in the microbiological sciences.

Illinois Emergency Services for Children has named Karen M. Sheehan, MD ’89, GME ’92, MPH, associate professor of pediatrics, the recipient of its 2006 Ron W. Lee Excellence in Pediatric Care Lifetime Achievement Award. She is medical director of the Injury Prevention and Research Center and medical co-chair of child advocacy at Children’s Memorial Hospital.

At the American College of Physicians annual meeting in Philadelphia last April, Debasish Sundi, a second-year medical student from Munster, Indiana, received an award for her presentation of “Mitochondrial Injury and NASH.” This was based on research she conducted in the laboratory of Peter F. Whitington, MD, professor of pediatrics, at Children’s Memorial Research Center.
