Accepted Students Take a Second Look

Nearly 250 guests arrived at the Feinberg School of Medicine for Second Look Weekend April 6–8. This number included nearly 150 newly accepted students plus friends, spouses, and other family members. Sponsored by the Office of Admissions, the weekend offers students admitted to the Class of 2010 a chance to further explore the school and Chicago without the pressures of interviews.

On Thursday evening the students and their medical student hosts attended a welcoming reception in the atrium of the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center of Northwestern University. In the Baldwin Auditorium—the first-year class’ home for the lecture portion of the medical curriculum—they were welcomed by Delores G. Brown, MEd, MS, associate dean for admissions; Angela Nuzzarello, MD, MHPE, associate dean for student programs and professional development; and Lewis Landsberg, MD, dean of the Feinberg School and vice president for medical affairs at Northwestern University.

Brown, who served as the master of ceremonies, commented, “You’ll be able to explore our curriculum, research opportunities, international opportunities, dual-degree programs, and so much more. You’ll have a chance to meet some of our faculty, administrators, and students.” She noted that more than 100 medical students volunteered to host visitors in their homes for the weekend.

Dr. Nuzzarello added, “We’re here to help you with whatever you need from the minute you walk into the school until the minute you walk out, and even beyond that.”

Pamela Meadows, special projects coordinator for the admissions office, detailed the weekend’s activities. The incoming students were divided into “colleges,” each named for the medical student who led them, and these colleges rotated through the various small-group presentations Friday. Meadows also introduced students on the planning committees that developed Second Look Weekend and noted that the admissions office would serve as a “hospitality suite” throughout Friday and on Saturday morning.

Adding his welcome to the festivities, Dean Landsberg said, “You’re a select group, and we’re very glad that you’re here. We have a well-earned reputation as a student-friendly school, friendly despite the rigors of a high-powered medical education. We believe we prepare you for any career in medicine.” Dr. Landsberg noted that the accepted students were selected from among more than 7,000 highly qualified applicants.

No matter what career the students ultimately choose, “We try to develop leadership qualities in our students, building on your own native talents, which are considerable,” he said.

In the past as many as 60 percent of students who attend Second Look Weekend matriculated to the Feinberg School.
