Hendrix Lab Will Be Cancer Training Program Site

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has named the laboratory of Northwestern University researcher Mary J.C. Hendrix, PhD, the site of a new training program for NCI-funded scientists whose research is focused on tumor-host interactions.
Dr. Hendrix’s laboratory, located at Children’s Memorial Research Center, was one of only six sites nationally and the only site in Chicago to receive the prestigious NCI designation.
Dr. Hendrix is president and scientific director of Children’s Memorial Research Center, professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of medicine, and a member of the executive committee of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
The Hendrix laboratory has uncovered key findings that increase understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying how cancer spreads through the body.
NCI-funded investigator-trainees will work in the laboratory for up to two weeks, during which time they will be exposed to all aspects of establishing and working with various cancer models, with the intent that they will be able to transfer the technologies to their laboratories.
The NCI program will support 60 to 80 researchers over the next two years. The hope is that disseminating expertise in such technically challenging models will increase the number of investigators whose research is focused on tumor-host interactions.
