In Memoriam (Lucita “Lucy” Rita)
Lucida “Lucy” Rita, MD, GME ’64, associate professor emeritus of anesthesiology, died September 30 of subdural hematoma; she was 79. Born in Manilla, she completed her medical education at the University of the Philippines and obstetrics and gynecology residencies at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu and Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. She then went into anesthesiology after completing residencies at VA Research, Wesley Memorial and Children’s Memorial Hospitals. Dr. Rita was a member of the medical school faculty from 1964â90 and served on the attending staff at Children’s Memorial where she was instrumental in teaching virtually all the anesthesiology residents who rotated through the hospital. She published numerous articles on topics related to her field including the effects of medications on children and issues surrounding operating on children with obstructed airways and breathing problems. Survivors include two daughters, Maureen Kaucher and Delores; two sons, Marc and Patrick; and four grandchildren.
