In Memoriam (Donald Bell)
Donald I. Bell, MD, associate professor emeritus of medicine, died August 17 in Evanston, Illinois, at age 87. A native of Joplin, Missouri, Dr. Bell received his MD degree from Northwestern University in 1942 and completed his internship and residency at Evanston Hospital. A diabetes specialist, he served as head of the hospital’s endocrinology and metabolic disease division for more than 20 years and was a member of the Northwestern medical faculty for 54 years. Highly regarded as a physician, teacher, and forward-thinking leader, Dr. Bell also served as president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). In that role, he helped transform the ADA from just a physicians group to one that included all people connected with diabetes. Survivors include wife Catherine, son Donald, daughters Catharine and Susan, and a granddaughter.
