Bonow is President-Elect of American Heart Association

CHICAGO— Robert O. Bonow, M.D., Max and Lilly Goldberg Professor of Cardiology at The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, has been named president-elect of the American Heart Association. Bonow will become the AHA president when the group’s 2002-03 officers are installed in June.

Bonow, who is chief of cardiology at the Feinberg School and at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and president of the AHA’s metropolitan Chicago board of directors, is internationally recognized for his research and teaching in coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and heart failure. He also is an authority on cardiovascular imaging methods to study these disorders.

Bonow recently was named a recipient of the AHA’s Coeur D’Or Award, which recognizes an individual for contributions to cardiovascular disease treatment and research. Among his other honors are the National Institutes of Health Director’s Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal and Outstanding Service Medal and the 2000 Distinguished Fellowship Award of the American College of Cardiology.

Before joining the Northwestern University faculty in 1992, Bonow was chief of the nuclear cardiology section and deputy chief of the cardiology branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Bonow is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, author or co-author of over 300 published articles and an editorial board member of Circulation and the American Journal of Cardiology.
