Distinguished Women in Medicine and Science Event to Honor Physician-Patient Communication Expert

The Northwestern Medical Women Faculty Organization (WFO) will host its 14th annual Distinguished Women in Medicine and Science event on Thursday, April 1. The event will honor Wendy Levinson, MD, Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor and Chair at the University of Toronto Department of Medicine, who will present a lecture, “Disclosing Medical Errors: A Challenge for Physicians and Institutions.”
During Levinson’s visit, she will attend a lunch to discuss the topic, “One Woman’s Journey: Mistakes Included.” Members of the WFO Steering Committee, Feinberg student representatives from the American Medical Women’s Association, and junior faculty who have registered are welcome to attend.
“The noon lecture focuses on how each woman has been the architect of her career; about challenges she has met; and about mentoring others,” says Sarah Sutton, MD, assistant professor of clinical infectious diseases in the Feinberg Department of Medicine and co-chair of WFO. “It is our gateway into the mind of our awardee.”
The Feinberg community â including faculty, staff and students â is invited to the lecture, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the Hughes Auditorium of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. The reception to follow in the Ryan Family Atrium will offer attendees an opportunity to network and discuss the ideas presented by Levinson.
Levinson, who also sits on the board of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), is well known for her research in physician-patient communication.
“I am truly honored to be recognized with this award,” says Levinson. “Also, I am excited to travel to Chicago for this event. I lived in Chicago for five years and have friends and colleagues at Northwestern, including Dean Larry Jameson, whom I work closely with at the ABIM.”
The Distinguished Women in Medicine and Science event is a Northwestern tradition. It was started in 1997 in memory of Carolyn Brent, MD, founder of WFO. To see a list of past honorees, click here.
