NU President-Elect Meets Feinberg School Community

Northwestern’s next president visited the Feinberg School last week during an introductory tour of the Chicago campus. Morton O. Schapiro, PhD, will become the 16th president of the University on September 1, succeeding Henry S. Bienen, who will step down after a highly successful presidency spanning 14 years.
Dr. Schapiro spent the morning touring the campus and meeting with medical school and hospital leaders. “It was so impressive to see how proud they are to be a part of Northwestern and how ambitious they are for the medical school,” he said later in the day during a speech and reception for faculty and staff members of all of the professional schools on the Chicago campus.
One of the country’s leading experts in the economics of higher education, Dr. Schapiro has been president of Williams College, located in Williamstown, Mass., since 2000. For six years prior to that, he was the Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California, where he previously had been professor and chair of the economics department. During his last two years as dean, he also served as USC’s Vice President for Planning. He previously was on the faculty of Williams from 1980 to 1991 as professor of economics and assistant provost.
“I will always treasure my experience at Williams, where I’ve learned so much,” said Dr. Schapiro. “It will be difficult to leave Williams, one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, but this is a tremendous opportunity to go to one of the best major research universities in the country. I very much look forward to being here and getting to know the Northwestern community.”
