Randal J. Wilson, CPA, joined the Feinberg School in January as senior associate dean for finance and budget, replacing Heather Haberaecker, who left the medical school in early 2005. Wilson comes to Northwestern from the University of Colorado Hospital, where he had been director of finance and controller since 1997.
The American Cancer Society (ACS), Illinois Division, awarded $1 million to the society’s national organization in honor of Steven F. Sener, MD, professor of surgery and an attending physician at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. Dr. Sener is president of the ACS and a past-president of the Illinois Division. The check was presented at a ceremony in Los Angeles on November 17.
Two physicians at Children’s Memorial Hospital (CMH) were honored with Friend for Life Awards by the Chicago Howard Brown Clinic for their dedication to promoting the health of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community: Ram Yogev, MD, professor of pediatrics, and Robert Garofalo, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics. Dr. Garofalo also began his term as president of the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association in September.
On September 28 Juda Z. Jona, MD, received the March of Dimes Jonas Salk Health Leadership Award for exceptional leadership and outstanding contributions to improving the health of infants and premature babies. Professor of clinical surgery at the Feinberg School, Dr. Jona is involved in pediatric surgical education and operative demonstrations around the world. He has organized educational exchange programs for physicians from Eastern Europe, and recently a program he led sent used neonatal ventilators to Romania.
In July the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago received the American Nursing Credentialing Center’s prestigious Magnet Award for excellence in nursing. It is the first independent rehabilitation hospital in the United States to garner the award. Children’s Memorial Hospital was awarded the same designation in 2001 and in November was re-designated a Magnet hospital, making it the first free-standing children’s hospital in the country and the only hospital in Illinois to be recognized twice. The designation is conferred for four years, then the hospitals are re-evaluated. Less than 3 percent of the approximately 6,000 U.S. hospitals achieve Magnet status.
Several Feinberg School faculty members recently were named to endowed professorships and chairs at Children’s Memorial Hospital (CMH). Raye-Ann O. deRegnier, MD, associate professor of pediatrics, holds the Marion Robinson Heise, PhD, Chair in Neonatal Development while Stewart Goldman, MD, associate professor of pediatrics, is the incumbent of the Gus Foundation Chair in Neuro-oncology.
Ann Harris, PhD, professor of pediatrics, became the Valerie and George D. Kennedy Research Professor in Human Molecular Genetics at CMH. Mary J.C. Hendrix, PhD, professor of pediatrics, holds the Medical Research Institute Council Endowed Professorship for the President and Scientific Director at Children’s Memorial Research Center.
Paul T. Schumacker, PhD, professor of pediatrics, has become the Patrick M. Magoon Distinguished Professor of Neonatal Research at CMH while Riccardo A. Superina, MD, professor of surgery, holds the Robert E. Schneider Chair in Transplantation.
