Honors & Appointments
Howard Schachter, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine and member of the Division of Gastro-enterology and Hepatology, was honored February 16 as the recipient of the humanitarian award of the Illinois Carol Fisher Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of American. Dr. Schachter also has been elected secretary-treasurer of the Chicago Society of Internal Medicine for 2001-02.
Ram Yogev, MD, professor of pediatrics and medical director of Children’s Memorial Hospital’s Center for HIV-Affected Families, was honored by the Chicago Medical Society with the 2002 Henrietta Herbolsheimer, MD, Public Service Award for his dedication to treating children with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Yogev recently traveled to South Africa to organize a National Institutes of Health-funded program that would develop an infrastructure to study and treat those with HIV.
Robert O. Bonow, MD, Max and Lilly Goldberg Distinguished Professor of Cardiology and division chief at the medical school, will receive the Coeur D’Or (Heart of Gold) award from the American Heart Association’s Metropolitan Chicago Chapter during the group’s annual Heart Ball on May 4 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. The award recognizes Dr. Bonow’s leadership in improving people’s health through cardiovascular treatment or research.
Andrea E. Dunaif, MD, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Molecular Medicine, has been named the Charles F. Kettering Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Gary G. Borisy, PhD, is the Leslie B. Arey Professor of Cell, Molecular, and Anatomical Sciences.
John X. Thomas Jr., PhD, has been named the Jacob R. Suker, MD, Professor of Medical Education.
Gary J. Martin, MD, vice chair of the Department of Medicine, has been appointed the Raymond J. Langenbach Professor of Medicine.
Kathleen J. Green, PhD, professor of pathology, will receive the Society for Investigative Dermatology’s 2002 Montagna Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to skin biology research. Dr. Green has been invited to lecture on May 18 during the society’s annual meeting in Los Angeles, for which she will receive a $1,000 honorarium.
The Society of Leukocyte Biology will honor William J. Karpus, PhD, associate professor of pathology, with its Dolph Adams Prize in recognition of the most highly cited research paper and review article in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. The award is based on the number of citations during the past five years and serves as a measure of the impact of the paper on the scientific community. His paper, titled “MIP-1 and MCP-1 Differentially Regulate Acute and Relapsing EAE as well as the TH1/TH2 Lymphocyte Differentiation,” was cited 75 times from 1996â2000.
David L. Nahrwold, MD, professor emeritus and former chair of surgery, received the American College of Surgeon’s highest honor—the Distinguished Service Award—during the group’s annual meeting in October in New Orleans.
Janardan K. Reddy, MD, Magerstadt Professor and chair of pathology, has been awarded the 2003 Rous-Whipple Award by the American Society for Investigative Pathology in recognition of a career of outstanding scientific contribution. In addition to receiving $5,000 and a plaque, Dr. Reddy will lecture at the society’s meeting April 12â16, 2003, in San Diego.
The National Commission on Correctional Health Care has awarded Linda A. Teplin, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, the 2001 Bernard P. Harrison Award of Merit. The presentation, made November 12 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, recognizes Dr. Teplin’s research on mental health among detainees in correctional facilities.
The new associate dean for academic affairs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) is Charles M. Watts, MD. He joined Northwestern from the University of Michigan where he had served as chief of staff and chief medical officer for the past eight years. Dr. Watts succeeds Lawrence L. Michaelis, MD, professor of surgery, as the Medical School’s associate dean and NMH’s senior vice president for medical affairs.
