Kathleen J. Green, PhD, became the Joseph L. Mayberry Sr. Professor of Pathology and Toxicology during investiture ceremonies on May 7. Dr. Green, a member of the Northwestern medical faculty since 1987, holds appointments in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology. Her research has helped define the pathological processes involved in cancer as well as autoimmune and inherited diseases.

In April James R. Webster Jr., MD ’56, GME ’64, professor of medicine, began his term as president of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago. Fifteen other medical faculty members were announced as fellows of the institute at the 87th annual meeting in April including Martin J. Arron, MD, assistant professor of medicine; H. Hunt Batjer, MD, Michael J. Marchese Professor and chair of neurological surgery; Richard H. Bell Jr., MD ’71, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor and chair of surgery; John T. Clarke, MD ’68, GME ’75, professor of medicine; Bruce A. Cohen, MD, GME ’84, professor of neurology; Raymond H. Curry, MD, GME ’85, associate professor of medicine and executive associate dean for education; and Linda L. Emanuel, MD, PhD, professor of medicine.

Also named fellows were James J. Foody, MD, associate professor of medicine; Leo I. Gordon, MD, Abby and John Friend Professor of Cancer Research; Peter J. Kahrilas, MD, GME ’84, Gilbert H. Marquardt Professor of Medicine; Gary A. Noskin, MD, GME ’89, associate professor of medicine; M. Christine Stock, MD ’81, GME ’85, James E. Eckenhoff Professor and chair of anesthesiology; Neil J. Stone, MD ’68, GME ’75, professor of clinical medicine; Mark S. Talamonti, MD ’83, GME ’89, associate professor of surgery; and Daniel Yohanna, MD, GME ’86, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

Leonidas C. Platanias, MD, PhD, was appointed deputy director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, effective May 1. He received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Patras Medical School in Greece. Previously Dr. Platanias was professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and director of the Cellular Signaling Program at the University of Illinois Cancer Center.

Angela Nuzzarello, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been named assistant dean for professional development, effective July 1. She will be located in the Office of Medical Education and Faculty Development. In her new role, Dr. Nuzzarello will be responsible for enhancing and coordinating academic advising and career counseling for medical students. She also will contribute to coordinating personal counseling and psychiatric resources for students. A graduate of Loyola University Chicago and Chicago Medical School, Dr. Nuzzarello has been a member of the Northwestern faculty since 1993. Recipient of several teaching honors, she has been a college mentor for the Patient, Physician & Society course and currently serves as its co-director.

Dudley S. Childress, PhD, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, received the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Paul B. Magnuson Award. Presented on February 11 in Washington, the award recognizes a VA rehabilitation and research development investigator who “exemplifies the entrepreneurship, humanitarianism, and dedication” displayed by Dr. Magnuson. A Northwestern orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Magnuson was the founder of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and served as VA chief medical director from 1948–51.

The American Laryngological Association awarded its Presidential Citation to David Hanson, MD, professor of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery, on May 10 during the group’s annual meeting in Boca Raton, Florida.

Robert O. Bonow, MD, Max and Lilly Goldberg Distinguished Professor and chief of cardiology, assumes the presidency of the American Heart Association in June.

V. Craig Jordan, PhD, Diana, Princess of Wales Professor of Cancer Research, is co-recipient of the Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research awarded by the American Association for Cancer Research. The other recipient is Elwood V. Jensen, PhD, who is a faculty member at the University of Washington in Seattle. Drs. Jordon and Jensen share the $200,000 prize and lectured at the group’s annual meeting held in San Francisco April 6–10.

In June Katherine Kaufer Christoffel, MD, professor of pediatrics, will receive the Abraham Lincoln Award from the Illinois Council on Handgun Violence. The award honors individuals who have shown great political and personal courage in the fight to reduce gun violence.

Toshio Narahashi, PhD, Alfred N. Richards Professor of Pharmacology and John Evans Professor, has been elected an honorary member of the Japanese Pharmacology Society.

Second-year medical student Taruna J. Madhav of Palos Hills, Illinois, is one of 50 outstanding young medical professionals nationwide to receive the AMA Foundation Leadership Award, which recognizes exceptional leadership and achievements in nonclinical community activities. Madhav is the founder and president of the Political and Legal Socioeconomic Medical Association (PLASMA), an organization that brings together medical, law, and business students to discuss health care issues. She also represents Northwestern medical students in various professional organizations and tutors underprivileged youth from Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood.
