Cancer Expert Jordan Honored by Queen
CHICAGO— Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has awarded an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) to V. Craig Jordan, the Diana, Princess of Wales Professor of Cancer Research, and professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry at The Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. The honor was announced in London on Saturday, June 15.
Jordan, a resident of Chicago’s Streeterville area, is director of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. He is a principal investigator on a $13 million Specialized Program of Research Excellence in Breast Cancer (SPORE) grant.
Jordan was awarded the honor in recognition of his development of tamoxifen for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Approximately 500,000 women are alive today because of the development of tamoxifen during the past 30 years, and tamoxifen is the first drug approved for reducing the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women.
British Honors are awarded on merit for exceptional achievement or service. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was founded in 1917, initially to recognize civilians in World War I. This award now honors civilians and service personnel for public service or an outstanding contribution to society.
A British citizen, Jordan was educated in Cheshire, U.K., and attended the University of Leeds where he received his BSc., PhD, DSc, and an honorary MD degree. He is the recipient of numerous awards.
