Honors & Appointments

The American Society for Clinical Investigation has inducted the following Feinberg School of Medicine faculty members into its ranks: Mary M. McDermott, MD, associate professor of medicine; Jane Y. Wu, PhD, professor of neurology; Boris C. Pasche, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine; and David M. Engman, MD, PhD, professor of pathology. Only 60 U.S. physician-scientists are members of this prestigious society.

Kasturi Haldar, PhD, Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Pathology, and Stephen D. Miller, PhD, Judy Gugenheim Professor of Microbiology—Immunology, have been elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology, the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Haldar is reknown for applying modern cell biological methods to studying malaria, and Dr. Miller has furthered the understanding of the mechanisms by which viruses initiate autoimmune disease.

The American Board of Neurological Surgery has appointed H. Hunt Batjer, MD, Michael J. Marchese Professor and chair of neurological surgery, as chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Jeffrey W. Cozzens, MD, associate professor of neurological surgery, was appointed to the American Medical Association’s CPT Editorial Panel, a multispeciality body responsible for maintaining current procedural terminology nomenclature and code set. Dr. Cozzens was an adviser to the panel from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons for 10 years before being appointed to this position.

Mark K. Eskandari, MD, associate professor of surgery, has been elected a distinguished fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). He was awarded this distinction based on his scholarly research activities, creative professional activities, and broadly recognized teaching excellence, notes the SVS.

In September Christopher C. Getch, MD, associate professor of neurological surgery, became vice president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Peter A. Kopp, MD, associate professor of medicine, has been appointed interim director of the Center for Genetic Medicine. A Feinberg School faculty member since 1997, he specializes in internal medicine and endocrinology with a clinical interest focusing on dysfunction and cancer of the thyroid. Dr. Kopp is also well known for his studies on Pendred’s syndrome.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., awarded Lee E. Miller, PhD, associate professor of physiology, the best podium presentation award at the group’s 10th International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics held June 13–15 in the Netherlands.

The Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology has appointed Albert A. Nemcek Jr., MD, professor of radiology, as editor in chief. He was also inducted as a fellow in the American College of Radiology.

Thomas V. O’Halloran, PhD, Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry, has been named associate director for basic sciences at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. He also serves as the director of the new Chemistry of Life Processes Institute at Northwestern.

The Scientific Advisory Board for the Blast Spinal Chord Injury Research Program at the Department of Defense appointed Stephen L. Ondra, MD, professor of neurological surgery, as a member. He was also named to the board of the Hugh & Carolyn Shelton Foundation for Military Neurotrauma, a group focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating traumatic brain injury in military personnel in battle.

Mark A. Reinecke, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was elected a fellow of the Association of Psychological Science, for his sustained outstanding scientific contributions to the field of psychology. His research has aided the development of guidelines for treating childhood depression and suicide, as well as Food and Drug Administration guidelines regarding the safety of antidepressant medications for youth.

Eric J. Russell, MD, Drs. Frederick John Bradd and William Kennedy Professor and chair of radiology, was appointed chair of the Neuroradiology Research and Education Foundation of the American Society of Neuroradiology.

Linda V. Van Horn, PhD, RD, professor of preventive medicine, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine. As a clinical nutrition epidemiologist, she has made major contributions to many of her department’s renowned multicenter, collaborative trails. She has been a Feinberg School faculty member since 1983.
