Douglas W. Losordo, MD, became the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research at an investiture ceremony held in May. Dr. Losordo directs the Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute and Program in Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine. His research interests include stem cell biology, angiogenesis, and vasculogenesis with a focus on developing therapies for cardiovascular disease.
The Medical Library Association (MLA) has named James Shedlock, AMLS, director of the Galter Health Sciences Library, to fellowship in the nonprofit, educational organization. Comprising more than 1,100 institutions and 3,600 members in the field of health sciences information, the MLA reserves this distinction for members who have demonstrated “sustained and outstanding contributions to health sciences librarianship” and made advancements in the field. The organization recognized Shedlock at its annual meeting in May.
Robert O. Bonow, MD, Max and Lilly Goldberg Distinguished Professor of Cardiology and chief, Division of Cardiology, has received the Gold Heart Award, the highest honor given by the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA selected Dr. Bonow in recognition of his distinguished service, especially noting his dedication and many accomplishments as a volunteer leader at the national level, including serving as AHA president and chief science spokesperson.
Darby J. Morhardt, MSW, LCSW, research assistant professor, Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center, received the 2007 SeniorBridge Award for Excellence in Social Work Practice. SeniorBridge is a national provider of customized professional services for clients with complex chronic health conditions. The company recognized Morhardt’s “high level of clinical expertise in providing social work services to individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.”
The Feinberg School celebrated the investitures of four faculty members in March. From the Department of Medicine, Hau C. Kwaan, MD, became the Dr. Marjorie C. Barnett Professor of Hematology/Oncology. From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Serdar E. Bulun, MD, was named George H. Gardner Professor of Clinical Gynecology, and Michael L. Socol, MD, and Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD, were both invested as Thomas J. Watkins Memorial Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Bharat B. Mittal, MD, professor and chair of radiation oncology, has been appointed a voting member of the radiological devices panel of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. He was also elected secretary-treasurer of the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiation Oncology Programs.
The National Institutes of Health’s Center for Scientific Review has selected William J. Karpus, PhD, Marie A. Fleming Professor of Pathology, to serve as a member of the Hypersensitivity, Autoimmune, and Immune-Mediated Diseases Study Section beginning this July.
Alan L. Buchman, MD, associate professor of medicine, was chosen president-elect of the American Federation for Medical Research as well as vice chair of the American Gastroenterological Association’s Nutrition and Obesity Section.
The Society of General Internal Medicine awarded Diane Bronstein Wayne, MD ’91, assistant professor of medicine, the 2007 National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education. Dr. Wayne received the honor for her work in medical simulation learning and the enhancement of resident training using innovative teaching techniques.
Joshua H. Singer, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology and physiology, was one of six Northwestern faculty members to receive a Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship. Dr. Singer was recognized for his research on neuronal connections in the retina and how they allow light to be encoded as a visual signal.
The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine presented D. Mark Courtney, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine, with its Young Investigator Award in May. The national honor is given to only three emergency medicine researchers each year and recognizes Dr. Courtney’s research on assessment and testing for possible pulmonary embolism, a commonly unrecognized and potentially fatal and disabling disease.
The Association of American Medical Colleges’ 1,100-member Group on Institutional Planning will be led by David H. Browdy, MS, the Feinberg School’s associate dean for strategic planning and management, beginning in April 2008. Browdy recently completed a term as chair of the group’s professional development committee and currently serves as the group’s chair-elect.
Bonnie J. Spring, PhD, professor of preventive medicine, was elected president of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. The multidisciplinary organization of clinicians, educators, and scientists is dedicated to promoting the study of the interactions of behavior with biology and the environment and improving the health and well being of individuals, families, communities, and populations.
Two honorary doctoral degrees were given to Jacob I. Sznajder, MD, Ernest S. Bazley Professor of Asthma and Related Disorders, and chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Granting the honorary degrees were the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Universidad de Murcia in Spain.
