Northwestern Offers Graduate Degree in Medical Informatics

CHICAGO—The Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies will offer a new master of science in medical informatics (MMI) degree program in partnership with the University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

The deadline for submitting applications to enroll in the program is November 11. The first class will be held on January 3.

Medical informatics focuses on the study and application of principles of information management, design, integration, implementation, and evaluation on all levels of health care systems. Students in this 10-course, part-time evening program will receive a comprehensive education in data management and health care information systems, with an emphasis on clinical decision-making; legal, ethical, and social issues; and the development and management of emerging medical technologies.

The marriage of IT and health care presents a challenge with a potentially huge return in improved patient care and cost-saving, said David Channin, MD, associate professor of radiology and chief of imaging informatics at the Feinberg School of Medicine, adding that federal government initiatives are among the forces driving the need for skilled medical informatics professionals.

“Northwestern University, with the Feinberg School of Medicine and its technologically advanced hospital network, is the natural choice for students who wish to become leaders in the medical informatics field,” Dr. Channin said. “The MMI program responds to a demonstrated educational and marketplace need that Northwestern University is exceptionally qualified to offer.”

The MMI curriculum is designed for a diverse group of students, including health care professionals such as physicians, administrators, educators, and researchers, as well as information technology professionals and other qualified individuals who wish to move into this growing field. Feinberg School of Medicine students may earn a joint MD/MMI degree. A non-degree option is available for students who only need specific courses. Most students will finish the MMI program within two years.

The School of Continuing Studies at Northwestern University offers working professionals the opportunity to continue their education through flexible evening programs.
