Institute for Healthcare Studies Formed

The Institute for Health Services Research and Policy Studies and the Center for Healthcare Studies have merged to form the Institute for Healthcare Studies. Kevin B. Weiss, MD, professor of medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, was named director of the new institute.

The institute’s mission is to promote, coordinate, and originate multidisciplinary research and education programs to improve quality, access, and equity in health care.

This year the institute will initiate the Center for Healthcare Equity, with David W. Baker, MD, associate professor of medicine and chief of general internal medicine, serving as acting director.

Also to be initiated is the Northwestern Center for Patient Safety, to be directed by Gary Noskin, MD, associate professor of medicine at the Feinberg School. The patient safety center is jointly sponsored by the Feinberg School and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Future institute efforts will include programs in health care quality and health policy and economics.
