Leon H. Dragon, MD, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Feinberg School, is medical director of the Kellogg Cancer Care Center at Highland Park Hospital, part of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (ENH). Dr. Dragon, who received his MD degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, completed residency training at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York and the University of Chicago, followed by fellowships in medicine and oncology at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the ENH medical staff in 2000. His chief interests are breast and ovarian cancer and lymphomas.

 

Sheldon I. Miller, MD, Lizzie Gilman Professor and former chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Feinberg School, in December received the 2002 Founders’ Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) during the group’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Miller, a founding member of AAAP and instrumental in the recognition of addiction psychiatry as a formal subspecialty, was honored for his contributions as a clinician, researcher, administrator, editor, and educator.

Nicole M. Woods, MEd, has joined the Feinberg School as director of the Office of Minority and Cultural Affairs. Woods holds a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the College of William and Mary and a master of education degree in counseling psychology from James Madison University. Prior to joining Northwestern, she had served as associate dean of students and director of multicultural affairs at Bard College in New York and as diversity manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting in Chicago. She will work closely with Associate Dean for Minority and Cultural Affairs John E. Franklin, MD, MSc, in providing leadership and advocacy for further incorporating diversity in all aspects of the medical school community.

Charles M. Falcone, MD, MBA, assistant professor of anesthesiology, received a second place award for best abstract at the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors annual meeting last October in Orlando, Florida. His entry, “Creating an Anesthesia Scheduling Paradigm,” describes Northwestern’s unique attending call schedule and how it has increased physician satisfaction in the workplace.

R. Norman Harden, MD, associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, was elected chair of the scientific committee of the Neuropathic Pain Institute.

Eugene R. Laughtenschlager, PhD, research professor of orthopaedic surgery and director of the Skinner Library for Biomaterials Research, has been named the Clifford C. Raisback Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Lautenschlager joined Northwestern’s dental faculty in 1966. Because of the overlap between dental and medical materials, he began collaborating with faculty members in the medical school’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Marian S. Macsai, MD, professor of ophthalmology, will receive the Eye Bank Association of America’s Paton Society Award and present a lecture at the group’sannual meeting in November in Anaheim, California. The award, established in honor of R. Townley Paton, MD, founder of the first eye bank in the United States, honors ophthalmologists who have made significant contributions to the association.

David L. Nahrwold, MD, professor emeritus of surgery, was honored as a life member of the Fellows Leadership Society of the American College of Surgeons during the group’s clinical conference last October in San Francisco. The society is the college’s distinguished donor recognition organization.

LoAnn Peterson, MD, professor of pathology, became vice president of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) on October 11 during the group’s annual meeting in Washington. Dr. Peterson previously served as secretary of the ASCP board of directors and was nominated to the board in 1999.

Eric J. Russell, MD, professor and chair of radiology, has been named the Drs. Frederick J. Bradd and William Kennedy Professor of Radiology. A member of the Northwestern faculty since 1986, Dr. Russell is an internationally renowned interventional neuroradiologist. He also holds appointments in the Departments of Neurological Surgery and Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. He served as interim radiology chair from January 2001 until he was appointed chair in September 2002.

Jerry J. Sweet, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, on January 1 became co-editor of The Clinical Neuropsychologist . In November Dr. Sweet was appointed vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.
