Chicago Magazine Features Breakthrough Doctors
Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine is well represented in Chicago magazine’s cover story on breakthrough doctors that appears in its January 2003 issue. Seven medical school faculty members, along with a staff member at a Northwesternâaffiliated teaching hospital, are among the 17 doctors featured as “pioneers on the frontiers of medicine….[who]explore new ways to combat—and cure—disease.”
Those featured by Chicago magazine include:
Teepu Siddique, MD, Abbott Labs Duane and Susan Burnham Professor, for his research on discovering the genes responsible for familial and juvenile amyothrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Dr. Siddique is a member of the attending staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Todd K. Rosengart, MD, associate professor of surgery (shown on cover), and Timothy Sanborn, MD, professor of medicine, for using angiogenesis (the body’s ability to grow new blood vessels) in combatting heart disease. Drs. Rosengart and Sanborn head cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology, respectively, at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare.
Todd A. Kuiken, MD, PhD, associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, for developing nerve-muscle grafts that can help provide more effective control of motorized artificial arms. Dr. Kuiken is director of amputee services at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
Richard K. Burt, MD, associate professor of medicine, and Ann E. Traynor, MD, assistant professor of medicine, for using stem cell transplants to fight autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and lupus. Drs. Burt and Traynor are on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Karen Koffler, MD, instructor in medicine and director of integrative medicine at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (ENH), and David Eton, PhD, research scientist in ENH’s Center on Outcomes, Research, and Education, for studying how alternative medical practices—such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, and yoga—can benefit patients.
Northwestern University is affiliated with five teaching hospitals through the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. These hospitals are Children’s Memorial Medical Center, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (Evanston, Glenbrook, and Highland Park Hospitals), Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and VA Chicago Health Care System—Lakeside Division.
